QuiltCon 2019- Day 4

Day 4

Today we just had one lecture left on working on accuracy. Learned a few tips and tricks there.

We did one more round in the show room and voted on our favorite quilt for the peoples choice award.

This was my pick….

And you know we had to go grab a couple more deals! Just a little more….

Quiltcon was an awesome experience! If you haven’t been you should definitely put it on your list. You won’t regret it!

I can’t wait to get home and start all my projects that I have been inspired to make.

QuiltCon 2019- Day 2

Day 2

We are here all weekend so we have the luxury of taking it slow to get through all the goodness here.

We hit up the show quilts first. Sooooooooo many amazing works of art here! Here are a few of my faves…

We made it through about half today and you know we couldn’t resist hitting up some of our fave shops again…

6.00 a yard folks! Such a deal…

OH, and don’t forget our stop at the GooGoo shop!

Tomorrow we will finish up the show quilts, visit some more local shops and get some sights in.

QuiltCon 2019-Day 1

I am so excited to be at QuiltCon!

We are in Nashville this year… I love the exciting cities they pick for us to visit! I am with two of my quilt besties. I love a good quilty road trip!

It is such a huge show! You definitely need a few days to soak it all in.

Day 1

First stop for us was a couple of lectures…. Building Your Quilt Practice and Free Motion Impact. Building Your Quilt Practice was not what we thought it was about, but turned out to be surprisingly inspirational. It focused more on how you practice your craft. How to make time, how to find what you love and what you don’t, and how to make your quilting your own. My favorite quote from the lecture was….

The first thing we hit after the lectures was the VENDORS! We just couldn’t wait to get our hands on some fabric. They have so much to look at we could barely make it through the first day…. we definitely saved some booths to go back to again.

Here is what I scored the first day…

Ahhhh…… in love<3

I got some great deals! 6.00 a yard and fat quarters for around 2.00. I definitely had to restrain myself!!! I also got some cork because I’m dying to try it on a zipper pouch.

Tomorrow we will check out all the rest of the show quilts and hit up some local quilt shops… Can’t wait.

Ask Sassy! Asking Sassy Quilting Questions…

Hey guys! Do you have lots of quilting questions you are dying to know the answers to? But…. are afraid to ask? or don’t know who to ask!

Well Ask Sassy!

You can feel free to ask in the comments or email me if you prefer to be anonymous:)

Todays Question:

Dear Sassy,

“I had fabric of whites, reds and some other colors. Well the starch spilled and now some of the red color is now on my white fabric, it bled together. Is there anything I can do to  get rid of the red stain on my white fabric?”

Why yes there is something you can do!

Fill your tub with hot hot water, add about a half a cup of Dawn dish detergent.

Using the original Dawn is best, no additives or fragrances.

Submerge your entire quilt in the water, keep quilt entirely under water. Let soak for about 12 hours, rinse and repeat as often as necessary!

Sassy Tip- 107

sassy_tip

Sassy tip #107:

Bias or Curved Binding

Image result for roll of quilt binding

Use binding cut on the bias when your quilt borders are curved, this has a stretch to it. Otherwise, use straight of grain.

Binding can be a little tricky sometimes. I know you have probably seen some pics of people cutting their binding on the diagonal….why go through all that trouble if you can just cut it straight???

Welllllll………

Fabric has a grain to it. When you cut binding for the straight edges of a quilt, you cut from the fold to the selvedge, you are then cutting on the straight grain. This type of binding is perfect for your general binding on your quilts. It is sturdy and if you pull on it you can feel that it has no stretch.

Butttt……

When you are working with a curved border you need a little stretch or bend to get it to fit around your quilts edges. This is called bias binding because the strips are cut on the bias and give it lots of stretch and movement.

Here are a few examples of what I mean…

Bias or curved binding is also used as the main design in some quilts and needs lots of stretch to do what the designer wants it to do.

Gorgeous don’t you think!

Churn Dash

Churn Dash Quilt Block

These Churndash blocks are one of my latest projects that I have started. I love this traditional pattern and it has been on my to do list for a long time!

The Churn Dash block is also known by several other names:

  • Monkey Wrench
  • Hens and Chickens
  • Lincoln’s Platform
  • Shoo Fly
  • Hole in the Barn Door
  • Fisherman’s Reel
  • Broken Plate
  • Love Knot
  • Ludlow’s Favorite
  • Quail’s Nest

My original plan was to make all the blocks the same, that seemed a little boring so I decided to do a reverse block and still keep it a two color quilt.

This is actually a very easy pattern, just some half square triangles and some strips.

I loved this fabric design! It is Add it Up by Cotton and Steel.

I pressed most of the seams to the side, but the two larger seams when finishing the block I pressed open just to reduce some of the bulk. This will help when you get to quilting this quilt. The needle doesn’t love super bulky seams.

Christmas Lights!

Christmas lights

Merry Christmas everyone!

Here is a Christmas project I have been working on…. sort of last minute and will be finished for next Christmas!

I just fell in love with these Christmas light bulbs!

The pattern is by Burlap and Blossom Patterns. She specializes in pieced patterns… no paper piecing!!!

She has lots of cute Christmas blocks!!!

I used my trimmings to make these Sawtooth Stars. I will make those the center.

Then I will add a border… maybe Christmas trees or candy canes…. and then have a large border of these cute Christmas lights. I am sort of making it up as I go. The original pattern in just for the block.

So even though you don’t have time to finish… let Christmas inspire you for next year!

Have a wonderful Christmas Day you guys!

Ask Sassy! Asking Sassy quilting questions…

Ask Sassy!

Hey guys! Do you have lots of quilty questions you are dying to know the answers to? But…. are afraid to ask? or don’t know who to ask! Feel free to ask Sassy(me,lol) anything you want to know and if I don’t know, then I will do the research to find out!

Leave your question in the comments or email me if you prefer to be anonymous:)

This weeks Quilting Question….

Question Mark Clipart google 11 - 5910 X 3272

Why when I’m piecing my blocks why does it never line up right? Everything seems off a little.

This is a great question! There are lots of reasons why things get a little off when doing our piecing. Here are 3 of the big ones:

Image result for scissor clip artImage result for sewing clip art  Image result for iron clip art

Cutting– you really do have to take your time and make sure you are cutting accurately

Seams– The infamous 1/4″ seam, Really practice getting this right, do some test pieces on your machine because each one is a little different. You can also buy a 1/4″ foot for your machine that helps a bunch. Check those out HERE. WHY??? If each seam is 1/8″ off… by the time you finish a row you can be a couple inches off! They add up quick.

Pressing– pressing correctly and not stretching your blocks out helps a lot too.

SO………………

We all want to be perfect quilters, but their actually is no such thing! The truth is it takes some time and efforts to be a great quilter. I’ve been quilting for 12 years and to this day I still get things “off a little”. It is said that the Amish leave at least one mistake in their quilts to prove that only God is perfect. That makes me chuckle because if I only had one mistake left it would be pretty awesome! Some mistakes I see and choose to fix if I can and some I don’t even see till I’m done, lol…..

But did you have fun????

YES!!!

I base my quilting on a precision to fun ratio! If my attempts at precision are bringing my fun level down too low …. its no bueno! For me, I need to be enjoying what I’m doing and if I’m stressing myself out, then I have lost my enjoyment. Now don’t get me wrong… there are lots of quilters out there that are obsessed with precision and it IS their kind of fun, so let them go get it:) There is no need to compare ourselves, in life or in quilting. So just have fun and what you don’t get right in this quilt, you can try harder in the next one!

So just pick one thing at a time to focus on upping your precision.

And remember, Keep your fun ratio in check!!!

Happy Quilting Sassites!
