Scrumptious Charm Quilt Finish!

Scrumptious Charm Quilt

Scrumptious Charm Quilt

Finished up my Scrumptious Charm Quilt this weekend! (I know…my names for quilts are lame!) This quilt used a Scrumptious by Bonnie and Camille charm pack and a white Kona snow charm pack. I added some yardage for borders and that’s it! I wanted a really simple quilt that was easy to put together AND actually let me use up some of this fabric that is in my sewing room just staring at me:) This is a great quilt for a beginner. I will share some more details on this pattern soon. I know for beginners the specifics for those borders, backing and binding really help.

scrumptious_ quilt

I totally got busted taking pics on my neighbors fence!!! Which is electric…yikes, only one buzz so that was a success(take note of the white rope). I gave her a quilted table topper as a peace offering so she is not pressing charges, ha ha! She was really just worried I would get electrocuted. If you grew up in the country you have most likely touched one of these bad boys…you won’t forget it, but not so bad. Does this make me seem crazy???

Scrumptious Quilt

For the quilting I used Aurifil 100% cotton, 50wt. in white. I started by quilting the center panel with some basic straight lines and then moved to the 2nd border and quilted more straight lines. I wanted to break up the lines so I did a simple loop de loop in the inner border. This wasn’t too bad because you have a defined space. You are doing just a simple row of loops. Now what for the outer border????

Scrumptious Quilt

The outer border was pretty wide, about 5″. I was feeling pretty brave after the inner border….okay, let’s do a feather! I had been practicing those a while back and was improving. I marked a blue chalk line along the center of the border to help( you can still see some of those)…..so where are those feathers??? Well, let’s just say it was like starting all over! It has been many months since my previous adventures and a lesson was learned. Use it or lose it!  I opted for lots more loop de loops. They came out okay, but I definitely got a little lost sometimes.

Now, I am just analyzing this to explain my process, but in reality I think it is just fine and when washed up will be perfect:)

Scrumptious Quilt Binding

I used a machine binding technique to finish my quilt. You can find the tutorial HERE. In my tutorial I tell you to stitch in the ditch along the binding, but as of late I really am liking to stitch just on top of the binding for a top-stitched look. It also makes it less noticeable if you veer off a bit.

Scrumptious Quilt Binding

Here is the back…..P.S. don’t you love the Scrumptious paisley backing! I really loved working with this line of fabric.

Scrumptious Quilt Binding

side note….Isn’t it funny how the white thread looks teal on the binding?

Flower Power Quilt an Oblongagonalong Finish!

flowerpower1

So excited to have finished up my Flower Power quilt!

This one was part of a quilt along over at Sew Fresh Quilts, called the Oblongagonalong. This unique take on a hexagon…a slightly different shape created by accident was fun to play with! It is made with all Y-seams so that was the challenging part…but, I finally got those down pat I think:) Lorna@SewFreshQuilts did a great tutorial for learning how to do those tricky seams HERE.

flowerpower3

It finishes at 35″ x 44″ and was made using fabrics from the Cuzco line by Kate Spain for Moda. I added a few yellow and bright blues to fill in where I needed extra. I think they add just the right amount of pop!

flowerpowercloseup

I used a meandering or stippling free motion quilting design and can I say it has been awhile! I had a little rust on these skills:) After a bit I started to feel like I was getting back in the groove of things. You can see some of the curves are a little angular and almooooost criss-crossing, that is a supposed no-no with stippling:)

flowerpowereyelashing

Here are a few areas that started to have some “eyelashes” and you can see my stitches were a little too long.  I was moving too fast for my needle speed. This causes the tension to get off…especially noticeable in curves and the bobbin thread comes up too far=eyelashes. I just had to get my hands and the needle speed in sync and go a little slower to get smaller stitches.

flowerpowerbacking

It was hard to decide what color thread I wanted to use since there are so many different colors.  I went with a magenta color thread for this one, it was a predominant color in the quilt and I had a similar color for the backing fabric…..when in doubt, match the back! This will hide the work a bit if you are worried about your stitching abilities:) I knew I was rusty and it wouldn’t be perfect.

flowerpowerbinding

I finished it up with a matching binding using THIS machine binding tutorial….purple would have looked great, but sadly no there was no purple left:( so I used more pink…matching the binding with the backing is helpful for hiding mistakes too!

Triangle QAL Update!

TriangleButton800

Update!

Hey guys! Hope your quilt tops are coming together and you are getting quilty with it:)

I have an update that will make you breathe a little easier…..you have some extra time to get these puppies finished! Yay, right!

My original list of dates finished us up on April 25th….I forgot to take into account that I usually give you the whole week to get your pics linked up. No way we can do that in one day and me get the Triangle Extravaganza together! So here is how it will go… I will announce the final link up on Friday, April 25th and you will have until Saturday, May 3rd at midnight/EST to get your finished quilt linked up. Monday, May 5th I will announce the winners and show off these gorgeous triangle masterpieces!

April 25th- Final link-up!

May 3rd- Final link-up closes.

May 5th- Triangle Extravaganza! and prize winners announced.

That is a few extra days….I know some wished there was an extra week or two! This is my first QAL so I will do better next time, I promise:) If I change it now I might have some angry quilters on my hands, lol.

***Note***

If you do not finish by the deadline on May 3rd and you get it done the next day…you will miss out on the prizes, but email me a pic and I will get you in the Extravaganza parade of quilts!

If you know you don’t make the deadline, no worries! Keep on quilting and I am planning a special something for those who just need more time. More on that after the Extravaganza so keep on pushing and see if you can’t get your quilt finished!

Guest Post- Felicity Quilts

Break Week!

Quilting Your Triangle Quilt

Wow guys, You made it! It is finally break week so there will be no link up this week:) You get to have all of this week and the next to get those triangle quilt tops basted and quilted…and if you are behind, Well time to catch up! No worries, you can totally do it:)

Congratulations to Kris@SewSunshine!, last weeks winner! I will contact you so you can get your gift certificate to Pink Chalk Fabrics and your free pattern from Swirly Girls Designs.

I have a guest post today for you from Felicity Quilts to help you figure out how to quilt up your beautiful triangles.

****

Hi there! I’m Felicity and I blog (sporadically) over at Felicity Quilts. I was delighted that Paula asked me to contribute a tutorial to the awesome Triangle Quilt Along that she’s hosting!

Triangle Garden

I recently made a triangle quilt of my own, which is how Paula found me. As is so often the case for me, I wasn’t entirely certain how to quilt the top once it was done. I do have a tutorial on my blog that shows how to use a photo of your quilt top, a vinyl sheet and washable markers to audition quilting designs. But rainy weather here in Vancouver meant that I didn’t have a photo of my quilt top to work with, so I had to find an alternate method. Here’s what I did:

1. I went to the image that Paula has in the kick-off post for the Quilt Along. I right-clicked on the image, selected Copy Image from the menu, then pasted it into a word processing document. I then printed the document 4 times.

2. Using a coloured pencil, I started doodling possible designs. First I tried some straight lines beside the seams:

Straight Line Triangle Quilt Design

OK but seemed like it would take a long time

And then some organic wavy lines:

Organic Triangle Quilt Design
Not feeling it

A curvy S-shaped wave with echoes (I’d seen this design most recently here and loved how it looked):

Wavy Triangle Quilt Design
This one has potential but worried how it would affect all those bias seams

And a spiral:

Spiral Triangle Quilt Design

Yup, this one

3. I chose the design that spoke to me. When I saw it the spiral on my colouring sheet, I just knew it was right choice. As you can see from my finished quilt, I actually did concentric circles, mainly because I didn’t trust myself to be able to execute the beginning of the spiral well enough.

Triangle Garden upward

Print as many copies of the sheet as you want – you could even use regular graphite pencil and erase if you wanted to reuse the same sheet. But just give yourself permission to play. You’ll see very quickly what design work for you.

Triangle Garden quilting

Happy Quilting!

Felicity

Thanks Felicity! Just a final note here guys to remind you that the next link up will be for finished quilts and the Grand Prizes are a $75 gift certificate to Fat Quarter Shop and a second prize for $50 to Cotton Bliss! So keep pushing and get those tops done:) It will be totally worth it for some fun fabric shopping! You can join the final link up no matter when you started the quilt along and even if you have not done any link ups so far…..so get to quilting:)

Sugar Block Catch up!

ExploreSugarblock

I spent this weekend catching up on some of my Sugar Blocks!

2014 Sugar Block Club

The one above is the Febuary block called Explore. This one really got on my nerves! If I had enough fabric I would probably redo it. You may be able to see some distortion…I was trying to press it into submission:) Well, the block won. It should finish at 12.5″, but it is 12″. I am going to just make do and leave it. I suspect that do to a lot of seams that I slowly ate up a little seam allowance here and there and it caught up to me. If I have to I can border it and then square it up to the proper size.

MercySugarblockThis block is called Mercy.

This one I thought would be harder, but it wasn’t! I think I could have used more contrast in the star points….more red. As I grow as a quilter I am trying not to over analyze everything and just keep moving forward. Less ripping, more stitching. So this one will stay as it is too!

Now to finishing April’s block and I will be back on track.

TriangleButton800

For all you guys doing the Triangle Quilt Along….

If you opted not to trim the zig zag edges of your quilt, Lorna at Sew Fresh Quilts shared a great tutorial on how to bind those and work inside those tricky corners! This is a great tutorial even if you are not using it for this quilt, so check it out and say hello from The Sassy Quilter!
