I Love Quilting Because…

National Quilting Month

Today is my stop on Fat Quarter Shops National Sewing & Quilting Month Blog Tour!

Fat Quarter Shop asked me to share why I LOVE Quilting, answer a few questions about my quilting experience and tackle a project I have never done before.

So here  goes…

National Sewing and Quilting Month

How did you start quilting/sewing?
I grew up knowing how to use a sewing machine, but when I was 16 I asked my grandmother, “Sassy”, to teach me how to quilt. I started my first quilt, a Virginia Reel or Monkey Wrench pattern, but never got past finishing the quilt top.

When was the first time you knew that you were a quilter/sewer?
When I was 29 I made a list of a few things I would do or finish before I turned 30! Finishing my first quilt was one of them:) So, I dug out my first quilt and went back to Grandma Sassy and we got it done! That was it for me, I knew I was officially a quilter. I loved how it used every part of me♥

Do you have any sewing/quilting horror stories or faux pas?
Hmmm… does sewing or cutting every block of an entire quilt wrong count! But, hey…this is how new patterns are made:)

What advice would you give to someone who’s just starting out in sewing/quilting?
Don’t take everything so seriously! Let yourself learn and give yourself time to perfect your skills. My favorite quilts from my Grandma Sassy are the wonkiest:) She always said that’s how you know it isn’t store bought!

Now what did I tackle that was completely new for me???

I am ashamed to admit I have never sewn a zipper into a project, EVER! If I can find a way to get around it…I do:) So this was just the shove I needed to get out of my box and just do it.

Way back when, I started creating these cute little sewing bags and did the applique and quilting for all the parts……and then……nothing!

So here it is! I actually finished one of the zipper pouches and guess what?

Zipper Pouch

You can enter this weeks Sassy Saturday GIVEAWAY>>>>> HERE!!!!!

Zipper Pouch

Phew! Not as scary as I thought:) Lindsey of Inspiring Creations compiled a list of 12 different zipper pouch tutorials I used to help me out, check it out HERE.

What are you going to try new this month? Come on, don’t leave me here outside of the box by myself! There is a lot of room out here and like me you might just like it:)

I would love you to leave a comment telling me what you are dying to try, but just haven’t yet!!!

Don’t forget!!! Fat Quarter Shop has created this FREE Color My Heart Quilt Pattern for you!

It makes a HUGE block – 27″ finished! The Color My Heart Pattern is a perfect place for beginnings to start! (Don’t forget to use #colormyheart on social media when you create and share this quilt!)

X-Plus and a bonus tip!

X-Plus quilt block

I have been working on my X-Plus blocks for my next border in my Aviatrix Medallion quilt…..don’t you just love these blocks! This is one reason I really wanted to make this quilt. I just love these blocks and wanted to get a feel for making them. Quite a few pieces, but not so hard. I can’t wait to show you all of these finished up…all these solids really look great together.

I am pretty much following Elizabeth Hartman’s pattern for all the different solids(bought a kit), she coordinated these so well! I am switching up my white background for this sketchy print and the gray for a gray polka dot…to spice it up a bit and make it my own. Here is Elizabeth’s original quilt:

Flat Shot

It’s a biggie, too 80 x 80. Check out the #aviatrixmedallion to see all the cool different ways people have put this one together.

You can purchase the pattern HERE or join in the quilt along if you are interested.

Bonus tip…

You may have heard of this one before, but here goes:)

For the corner units of this block you have you sew squares on the diagonal, then trim the corner off and press it open.

If while you are doing this you go ahead and stitch another line about 1/2″ away…(toward the outer corner!!!) and then cut between the two lines of stitches….

bonus hst

You will get these lovely little bonus half square triangles! and Yes….they are tiny:) About 1″ or so.  I love saving these and plan to make some little fun projects like fridge magnets or christmas ornments with them.

I always stitch these up and then toss them in a jar until I am ready to use them. To cut triangles this small and try to feed them through your machine is a little tough, but this is a simple quick way to  just pop ’em out.

bonus hst

This will work for any type of block where you are stitching the square on the diagonal and then trimming it off….other examples would be in Flying Geese and Snowball techniques.

I just love all these solid and can’t stand to just toss these little cuties!

Memory Quilt

Memory Quilt

Memory Quilt

Well, I finally have made some progress on my latest commissioned Memory Quilt!

I decided to attack this project with simplicity. I think most people that want a quilt made are thinking of a handmade patchwork feel and not a quilt masterpiece….especially if they don’t give you any direction at all in regard to the design…..or at least that’s what I am hoping:) It took me quite a while to decide on this and finally just started cutting! I feel like I have been just holding on to this bag of clothes for months….I don’t know about you guys, but this whole timeline thing is probably the one thing I actually do not love about making quilts for others. I always feel like I keep them waiting SO long! Oh well….that is my process I guess:) I have to really think about it and wait until it speaks to me.

That’s my story and I’m sticking to it!

Memory Quilt

In my previous post I talked to you guys about how I just spent some time looking over the clothes, analyzing the fabric and how much useable material I had to work with. These clothes really struck me as so personal and I could feel all the love inside them…..I think that made them harder to cut up!

My next step was to pull a few fabrics that I thought coordinated with the general feel of all the clothes. The person who I am making it for told me her favorite was a country blue. I picked a couple different shades and added a similar style yellow for some extra pop!

Memory Quilt

I pressed all the shirts, cut out all the large flat areas, and then subcut them into 4.5″ x 8″ rectangles. I laid them out on my design wall with staggered rows so that the seams would alternate. After sewing everything together I trimmed the edges so they were square.

memoryquilt_layout

I hope they are going to like this quilt!

Memory Quilt

Ahhh……a little summer breeze:) Not great for picture taking, but beautiful none the less!

Now…..should I add a border??? Hmmmm…..what do you think? I have plenty of the blues and yellow left over.
